Mosque Portacabin

There's approximately 2,757 mosques in Abu Dhabi and they come in various shapes and sizes, like this one. However, the authorities have started replacing all wooden and temporary mosques with new and permanent buildings. Shame, I quite like them.

The Nest

The latest structure on the Corniche is this wooden heptagon sculpture comprising of seven pillars representing the 7 Emirates of the United Arab Emirates. It was erected on New Year Eve and I'd originally thought they were going to burn it in celebration at 12 midnight, but it seems like it’s going to be a permanent fixture. Not really sure how much I like it. What do you think?

Car Trouble!

Not mine thank God, but one of the challenges of driving in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is avoiding scenes like this. Not a day goes by without seeing a traffic accident and although most are just fender benders, car accidents are the second biggest killer of people in the UAE after heart diseases – Let’s be careful out there!

Sweet Home Abu Dhabi

After spending a small fortune at Dubai’s Global Village, it’s time to head back home to Abu Dhabi. For the next excursion, I’m hoping to visit the Northern Emirates and beyond (including the Strait of Hormuz), which offers some spectacular scenery.

Today’ s photo is of Abu Dhabi’s first ever mall – The Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre and Gold Centre, currently being extended to include more shops - not that Abu Dhabi actually needs any more retail outlets.

Wannabe the Queen of Sheba?

As well as spices, the Yemen Pavilion at the Global Village also offers great jewellery, including some rather nice coral and amber pieces, which if you bargin hard is very affordable.

Spice for Life

"Cinnamon Girl"
by Neil Young

I wanna live
with a cinnamon girl
I could be happy
the rest of my life
With a cinnamon girl.

A dreamer of pictures
I run in the night
You see us together,
chasing the moonlight,
My cinnamon girl.

Ten silver saxes,
a bass with a bow
The drummer relaxes
and waits between shows
For his cinnamon girl.

A dreamer of pictures
I run in the night
You see us together,
chasing the moonlight,
My cinnamon girl.

Pa sent me money now
I'm gonna make it somehow
I need another chance
You see your baby loves to dance
Yeah...yeah...yeah.

Page 3 Boys

Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined appearing on page 3 (synonymous with pinups and centrefolds back in the UK) of any publication let alone TimeOut Abu Dhabi. My blog is the one on the right, with the picture of the the dinosaur, entitled 'Finders Keepers" which I posted back in December. The other two blogs are 'Neil and Caz in Abu Dhabi' and 'Abu Dhabi Dispatches', both worth a peruse.

Inside the Yemen Pavilion at Global Village

SPICES By Poetic Muse

Poems are like spices
What appeals to one person's senses may not appeal to another
Some like really spicy sonnets
Others like a slow simmering sestina
Some like flamboyant flavors
Others like tried and true recipes with no surprises
They would rather have sweet than spicy
Some like traditional flavors
Like haiku and tanka
And for those exotic tastes there are diamantes
And for the naughty there are limericks
Surely something for everyone in this buffet of words
Free verse anyone? All you can eat?

Incredible India at Global Village

I'm on the last leg of my Dubai tour which today brings me to the Global Village, a very popular outdoor cultural entertainment and shopping venue which runs for 100 days from November 2009 to February 2010. This is inside of the India Pavilion which sells handicrafts from different states of the country. In previous years, the Indian pavilion has achieved various awards like 'The Best Pavilion', 'Best Folklore' and the 'Best Global Day Award'. I'd like to nominate it for the 'Best Samosa' Award!

Red Sky over Dubai

Red Sky
by Malcolm Coleman

As I walked today
I saw black angry clouds,
staring starkly against
a flaming red sky,
and yet I was not afraid
I could see no anger in the sky.

The sky was displaying,
in the way that only it can,
that life, although hard,
has moments of incredible beauty,
without which we would all fade out,
and I thank you for being my red sky.

The red sky I saw,
was not red with anger,
but it was tinged throughout,
with the red of love.
A pure form of sweetness,
that lasts forever.

Ever since I found you,
my whole life has changed,
I see beauty and love wherever I turn.
Maybe it is because you love me so much,
that I become stunned thinking of you,
so that wherever I look, you are there.

The Lion King

Next stop - Dubai Zoo, which is apparently the oldest in the Arabian Peninsula. Built in 1967, it's located in Jumeirah. It's not a big zoo and the animals are kept in poor, cramped conditions except when they let them out to play, like you can see here - How cool is that!
