Taken at Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain, one of the largest in the UAE and built in the 1890's. Today it's home to a cultural centre with a permanent exhibition on Wilfred Thesiger, the intrepid explorer; travel writer and photographer.
I notice the stairway has a right hand thread, i.e. if defending against intruders coming up the stairs, a right-handed swordsmen would have more room to swing his sword in defense from above. This used to be a consideration for Scottish castles, I wonder if the same applied here?

So simple and very nice!
I also like it in b/w.
Beautiful image, perfect in B&W.
A fantastic composition with a great range of tones and good control over the exposure. Well done on making the shot!
Lovely perspective but I hope they have a lift as well.
Wow, fantastic shot. I didn't realize there were any structures this old in the UAE.
I love the image and the lighting! I wonder if the stairway to Heaven really looks like that?!
No Leif, the stairway to heaven is made of all that glitters, and I think it works like an escalator.

Interesting point Stephen. I can't recall seeing too many swords here so I'm wondering if they simply borrowed the design from the West?
Nice composition, great shot
