du’s Social Media Awards Ceremony - And the winner is.....
Unfortunately I wasn’t a winner at the du’s Social Media Awards ceremony last week but hey, being a top 3 finalist from the entire UAE (of 8 million people) is still a great achievement right? I was also the oldest - Another achievement! (shame there wasn’t a prize for it!)
The ceremony was an amazing spectacle, a cross between the Oscars and American Idol, with motivating speeches, singing duets and famous Emiratis all appearing on stage. My big moment came when the three finalists in my category (for Best Blog) were paraded on stage in front of Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the 1000+ strong crowd whilst the above video was played. Fortunately they let us sit down first before announcing the winner (else there would have been tears). The winner, Abdullah Al Abdooli for his site http://www.snyar.net/ also won the “People’s Choice Award", so a really tough category to win! Congratulations to Abdullah and also to du for organizing such a brilliant competition - What a great company. And finally to you, my discerning public for your support and encouragement.
As for me, my next quest is to win this http://hipa.ae/en/home which carries a grand prize of US $120,000 !!!!!!

You're doing quite well for a 'foreigner' :-)
I think it's wonderful when expats go to other people's countries and do so much good stuff, instead of huddling in their own little groups, complaining.
Thanks :)
During my first week at work in the UAE, my Canadian boss at the time asked when I was going to join the 'British Club' in Abu Dhabi. My reply was..... NEVER!
Sadly, there's plenty that do and there's even a waiting list!
