Did you guess right? This unofficial dune bashing event was eventually stopped by the police. Good fun while it lasted.

Annual Camel Festival

Welcome to another mini-series of photographs. This time it’s from the recent 9-day annual Camel Festival in Zayed City in the Western Region (some 200 km from Abu Dhabi). Events included a camel beauty pageant, camel racing, camel auction, date contest, photographic competition, plus a handicrafts village. There were considerable prizes on offer ranging from cars to big money. Some 24,000 camels showed up for the event along with me and my camera.

Our Daily Bread

There’s a bread shop like this on every street corner in Abu Dhabi. They only sell one thing - unleavened white flour tandoor (clay oven) baked bread. Extremely popular with the Pakistani community.

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) Tower

Here’s another view of the 36-story ADIA skyscraper I featured back in November. ADIA is the investment arm of the UAE and has anywhere between $650 billion and $875 billion in assets.

According to Wikipedia, an estimated 73.9 percent of the population here is comprised of non-citizens. Here are 4 of them (5 if you count the dog) enjoying a day out on their boat.

Welcome to the heaving Rawabi Al-Sham Restaurant and Pastry. Checkout the boxes of tea piled up on the back counter.

Inside the Bus Terminal

I love the funky looking interior of the bus terminal, which looks much larger than its exterior. The décor feels very 1970’s (although it's actually built in the late 80’s). There’s not a lot inside apart from for a couple of shops, some plants and a humming café (which I’ll show you tomorrow).

Down at the Bus Terminal

With its unusual architecture and green decor, the Abu Dhabi Bus Terminal is an unmissable city icon. It’s also a people magnet for anyone traveling to any of the other 6 emirates and beyond. Come back tomorrow and I'll show you the inside.
