Wind Catchers

These traditional wind catchers would have been common place in the UAE 30 years ago and used as a very effective form of air conditioning. However, they’ve long been replaced by electric AC units. Unfortunately, the energy use and health implications make this modern technology far from ideal. Maybe in the future we will revert back to something like this?

I can't stop thinking about this...does it really, I mean REALLY work? Because, if it does, I know people here would gladly try it.

Birds might think it's their home though, hmm.

I think this would redirect the slight breeze down into the room, but I may be very wrong. It is so different from anything I have seen before. You find some great things to photograph.

Glennis is right but I couldn't tell you if and how well they work. There's a short article on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windcatcher worth reading.
